Actuary Ms Nyasha Mapolisa has called on Zimbabwean small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to shift from survivalist operations to scalable, formalised businesses capable of employing thousands and competing beyond national borders.
Speaking at the Zimpapers public lecture in Harare this morning, Ms Mapolisa said the country must pivot towards building enterprises that can create large-scale employment.
“We need to pivot so that we can employ and build companies that employ thousands,” she said.
Ms Mapolisa noted that current economic conditions present a rare opportunity for growth, highlighting alignment across policy and market access.
She pointed to the Government’s push for a 24-hour economy as a positive signal to business.
“A 24-hour economy will create an enabling environment for business,” she said.
Ms Mapolisa also underscored the significance of the African Continental Free Trade Area, describing it as a transformative platform for Zimbabwean enterprises.
“The AfCFTA is a big market of over one billion people, and it can help Zimbabwean entrepreneurs grow their businesses,” she said.
However, she warned that accessing continental opportunities will require a shift in mindset and operations.
“However, this is not a market for hustlers, it’s a market for formalised professional businesses,” Ms Mapolisa added.
She further highlighted Zimbabwe’s upcoming role as host of the Intra-African Trade Fair 2029, saying the event presents a strategic opportunity for local firms to position themselves within African value chains.
Ms Mapolisa stressed that with favourable policies, expanding regional markets and increased economic coordination, Zimbabwean SMEs are well-placed to grow, provided they embrace formalisation and long-term growth strategies.
