Adding natural elements into your home

THERE is nothing exciting like being surrounded by nature. Make your home look like an exotic sanctuary by adding natural elements to your home.

Contemporary home injected with natural elements will make your home look elegant, feel calm and cosy. Having natural elements such as twisted branches, flowers and shells makes your space look fantastic on everything from walls to upholstery to accessories.

In this week’s column I take you on a step-by-step journey into turning your home into a cosy, trendy, organic retreat.

Colour plays an important role in natural décor. Notable is that white, ivory and brown colours are colours that make a frequent appearance in natural décor. For example placing shells and nests in your display add a little punch to your decorations. Painting the back of a cabinet with an eye-catching shade will make white objects pop.

Natural items in your home when correctly done will portray a certain theme. If branches and shells aren’t your thing, but you want to bring a little nature to your decor, opt for representations of flora and fauna on fabrics, artwork, and pillows. Abstract interpretations, such as on these silk watercolour pillows, bring a layer of sophistication, too.

Sometimes the addition of a single natural object can launch a vignette into perfection. Look for items that have interesting shapes and are to scale with the rest of the display. Here, a twisted branch with plenty of tendrils is the same proportion as the stack of books and box it sits on, which creates balance within the display.

Natural items offer almost endless inspiration for home decorating. For instance oversized bird-feather prints on the shell and woven area rug, this room gives off an undeniable beach-house vibe. The brightly patterned pillows and emphasised colours found in the artwork keeps the space looking fun and fresh.

Use bowls and trays to enclose stray objects, and display shells or rocks inside the pretty vessels. One way of doing it is to have different colours and sizes of stones inside a pale surrounding a flower. That can be used as a centrepiece.

A touch of greenery also works. For your centrepiece display gather a collection of cylindrical vases in various sizes, along with large leaves in a variety of textures and colour patterns. Put a bit of water in the vases and tuck the leaves inside for a natural display with a modern twist.
