Adeogun: I was onside – Highlanders striker speaks

HIGHLANDERS match-winner Benjamin Adeogun has dismissed any doubts over the legitimacy of his decisive goal against Scottland, insisting he timed his run to perfection and was clearly onside before slotting home the winner at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.

The goal proved enough to hand Bosso a memorable 1-0 victory over the defending Premier Soccer League champions, although some Scottland supporters questioned whether the Nigerian striker had strayed offside before finding the back of the net.

Adeogun explained that he had anticipated defender Peter Muduhwa’s movement and deliberately held his run to avoid being caught offside.

“I said it earlier that once we score first we are good to go. I know all of them were focusing on the front, so I stayed behind Peter. When I saw Peter didn’t go for the ball, then I just ran behind and I hit the target,” said Adeogun.

The striker’s composed finish sparked wild celebrations among the Bosso faithful and capped an impressive display by Highlanders against one of the league’s strongest sides.

Adeogun admitted that finding the back of the net always gives him confidence, but stressed that the team’s victory was more important than his individual achievement.

“As a striker once I score I feel good. It’s a game of football. After 90 minutes you just accept the result,” he said.

The Nigerian believes Sunday’s victory should serve as a springboard for Highlanders as they continue their push in the league.

“After today’s win we expect more wins. We expect more wins,” he said.

Despite the significance of scoring the winner against the defending champions, Adeogun remained grounded.

“I don’t feel any difference. A goal is a goal. We are still there and the game is still there also. We keep pushing.”

Adeogun’s goal extended Highlanders’ recent good run under coach Benjani Mwaruwari and provided further evidence of the striker’s growing confidence as Bosso look to build momentum in the second half of the season.
