A US$33 million groundbreaking project is set to significantly enhance the electricity transmission capacity in Tete province, Mozambique, with the potential to transform lives and businesses across the region.

This multi-faceted initiative funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) boasts a colossal energy transport capacity of 2 300 megawatts (MW), enough to power thousands of homes and fuel industrial growth.

At the heart of the project lies the expansion of the Songo substation.

This critical hub will see the extension of its 220 kV busbar, enabling smoother power flow.

A powerful new 600 MVA 220/220 kV phase shift transformer will be installed, acting as a conductor, regulating grid currents and ensuring stability.

In addition, a 3×200 MVA 220/400 (300) kV step-up transformer will be deployed, boosting voltage levels for efficient long-distance transmission.

The existing 3×200 MVA 220/400 (300) kV transformer will also undergo a comprehensive refurbishment, ensuring optimal performance.

Meanwhile, the Matambo substation will undergo its own transformation.

This vital link will be expanded, and a dedicated 400 kV feed supply will be constructed, seamlessly integrating the incoming 400 kV line from Songo.

This enhanced infrastructure will act as a crucial artery, transporting vast amounts of power across the region.

The project’s impact will be far-reaching, directly benefiting the entire Tete province, situated within the strategic Zambezi Valley Development Corridor.

This area, bordering Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, encompasses 15 districts, each poised to experience a surge in reliable and accessible electricity.

From Angónia to Zumbo, residents and businesses will have the opportunity to unlock their full potential, powered by this transformative initiative.

This project is not merely an engineering marvel; it’s a beacon of progress, illuminating a brighter future for Tete and its neighbours.

By strengthening regional integration and empowering communities, this electrical expansion has the potential to rewrite the narrative of the Zambezi Valley, fostering economic growth and social development for generations to come.
