Tackling drug abuse needs a multi-sectoral approach as it is everyone’s responsibility to fight such societal problems, Manicaland’s Youth Quota Member of Parliament, Honourable Stanely Sakupwanya has said.
Addressing the gathering at the Apostolic Faith Mission’s anti-drugs campaign in Rusape last weekend, Honourable Sakupwanya said the youths, as the vanguard of the future, must shun drugs.
This comes as Government has called upon all stakeholders to put all hands on the deck to fight drug and substance abuse.
Honourable Sakupwanya commended the church for complementing Government’s efforts in fighting drug abuse.
“It is not only Government’s responsibility to fight societal problems such as drug and substance abuse. Government provide policy direction, and it is every stakeholder’s duty to do their part like what AFM is doing.
“Drug abuse is a serious threat to youths’ future, hence the church must come on board and use its influence and wider reach to curb this menace.
“A healthy nation is a prosperous nation.
“Our youths should concentrate on worthwhile activities such as education, work and worshiping God,” said Honourable Sakupwanya.
AFM Manicaland Central Overseer, Reverend Benson Katakwa said it is the church’s responsibility to fight drug abuse through teachings and preaching.
“Drug and substance abuse is so rife in the country, and it is actually escalating. We have noted with serious concern that there is no realisation of the serious side effects of drugs by users, hence this campaign so that we get into the communities and spread the word.
“There is need for churches to go out and preach the word of God and fight drug abuse. We want to reach out to those affected by drug abuse and those with potential of being lured into substance abuse,” said Rev Katakwa.
