A pastor’s family was left terrified after five robbers raided his home and tied his hands to his wife’s hands while pointing a gun at his head and allegedly robbed him of US$15 000 which belonged to the church.
The incident happened at around 7:30 am after Pastor Jedmos Moyo (53) from the AFM church, had come back home after dropping off his daughter at school. He stays in a flat situated at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Jason Moyo Street in the Bulawayo city centre.
While Moyo was climbing the stairs to his home, five men followed him. When he was about to open the door to the living room, one of the robbers grabbed him by his neck and pointed a pistol at his head.
“Soon after that, they handcuffed him while one of the accomplices searched his trousers’ pocket and took keys before opening the main door and entering the living room,” said a source close to Moyo.
According to the source, Moyo did not scream and they found his wife sitting in the living room and tied her hands to Moyo’s hands with an electric cable.
“After that, they were ordered to lie on the floor. After a few minutes the unsuspecting children who were in another room called out to their mother and rushed to the sitting room before they were ordered to join them on the floor as they threatened to gun them down. In fear they lay down,” said the source.
The robbers carried out their mission and demanded money, Moyo gave them keys to his bedroom where they took a bag carrying church coffers.
“The bag contained US$15 000 and they took it before locking them inside the living room after which they fled,” said a source close to investigations.
The incident was reported to the police. Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.
“We would like to encourage churches and other institutions to bank their money rather than to keep it at their homes or in offices. We would also like to discourage churches from announcing to the congregants how much they have in their bank account or how much they raised from fundraising,” she said.
Asst Msebele also advised the business community to strengthen security in their premises. Efforts to get a comment from Pastor Moyo were fruitless.
