Africa Albida Tourism boss scores big

AFRICA Albida Tourism (AAT)’s strides in supporting Zimbabwe tourism rejuvenation has received a major boost.

The hospitality group’s chief executive, Ross Kennedy, won the 2019 Outstanding Contribution award alongside the late Dr Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi.

The award, which is part of the Diplomat of the Year Awards, is given to an organisation or individual who has vastly contributed to the relationship between Zimbabwe and other nations. Also, the operators’ initiatives should have impacted positively on the lives of ordinary people. AAT’s extension drive has seen the group splash over a million dollars in expansion and renovation of its facilities. The hospitality group operates a portfolio of properties in Victoria Falls namely Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, Victoria Falls Safari Club, Victoria Falls Safari Suites, Lokuthula Lodges and The Boma-Dinner and Drum Show.

By sprucing up its image and adding new activities as well as accommodation options, AAT has immensely contributed in boosting arrivals in Victoria Falls. The tourism group is currently experiencing one of its best business periods in close to a decade.

Its flagship property, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, is currently enjoying occupancies of over 80 percent. Leading United Kingdom newspaper, The Telegraph, last year named AAT’s two hotels, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and Victoria Falls Safari Club, among the best on the continent.

Upgrading of the Victoria Falls International Airport, and the business and tourism friendly policies of the Second Republic, have had a positive impact on tourist arrivals in Victoria Falls. The group is also involved in anti-poaching campaigns in and around the Victoria Falls area through activities like “Annual Golf Fundraising Tournament”. Kennedy is delighted with the recognition.

“I am very humbled to be mentioned in the same breath as Tuku. This award represents what we at Africa Albida Tourism do. It has always been about country first, and the destination of Victoria Falls second and we are very honoured to have been recognised,” he said.

The AAT boss notes the tourism boom being witnessed in the country requires hospitality companies to improve service quality to meet international standards.

“… all of us in the industry need to be reviewing quality, service, hospitality and the facilities and activities we offer in order to meet that demand. We need operators who keep up with the latest tourism trends in order to keep up with other competitors.”

Hosted by the Diplomacy Appreciation Trust and Diplomat Magazine, the annual awards were established in 2012. AAT has in the past won numerous accolades. Last year they won the Achievement in Marketing Award and have on several occasions scooped gongs at the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority organised ceremonies.
