THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is set to commemorate Africa Environment Day, alongside the National Clean-Up Day at Hande High School in Buhera District next Friday.
Activities include a clean-up campaign stretching from Dorowa Rural Service Centre to Gaza, as well as a tree-planting exercise at Hande High School.
The Africa Environment Day is a continental observance established by the Organisation of African Unity in 2002 to spotlight Africa’s most pressing environmental challenges and is commemorated on the 3rd of March annually.
This year’s commemorations are being held under the theme: “Biodiversity and Traditional Knowledge: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods.”
EMA provincial spokesperson, Mrs Alice Rutsvara, said the theme highlights the indispensable role of indigenous knowledge, customary practices and cultural values in natural resources management. “This day seeks to raise awareness about environment protection, promote sustainable use of natural resources, encourage tree planting and conservation efforts, as well as promote policies for environmental sustainability,” she said.
Africa Environment Day seeks to raise awareness on critical issues such as deforestation, land degradation, desertification and climate change — all of which pose serious threats to food security, livelihoods and sustainable development across the continent.
