African Airlines have criticised the European Union for being a stumbling block in the growth of the aviation industry in Africa through its “controversial” ban of airlines from the continent. African Airlines Association Secretary General Mr Elijah Chingosho, who presented on the challenges facing African Airlines at the 9th edition of Routes Africa conference underway here, said the EU’s decision was purely commercial.
“There are 140 airlines banned by the European Union yet we have EU airlines flying into those areas where African Airlines were banned citing controversial security measures.
“Other Airlines which have been banned do not even exist but they are on the prohibited list and we tend to wonder how many countries are in Africa,” he said.
He said if it was for safety reasons they should follow International Civil Aviation Authorities Organisation guidelines on safety and not some regional organisations.
