AFRICAN diplomats in Zimbabwe have launched a campaign against deforestation and land degradation through tree planting.
Speaking at the launch held at Heritage Village within Liberation City in Harare, Rwandan Ambassador James Musoni said the initiative complements national greening efforts.
“Deforestation and land degradation are concerns for most African countries, and we must stand together to reverse deforestation and restore degraded lands,” he said.
Environment, Climate and Wildlife Minister Dr Evelyn Ndlovu hailed the initiative, saying, “Your support demonstrates the power of international cooperation in addressing global challenges like climate change.”
Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Charles Tawengwa emphasised the importance of engaging in afforestation and reforestation efforts to combat the scourge of deforestation.
“Many in today’s society mistakenly believe that urban areas are built-up environments incapable of hosting tree-planting events like the one we are witnessing today,” he said.
“But urban greening is about the sustainable planning, planting, protection, maintenance and care of flora and fauna, while promoting local wildlife within city spaces.”
