First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa on Tuesday attended a China-Africa meeting on HIV/AIDS prevention and control in Beijing, which saw the launch of an HIV/AIDS combat initiative.
The First Lady, along with 36 spouses of other African heads of state and government and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan launched the initiative at the meeting for joint efforts by China and Africa to combat HIV.
In terms of the initiative, China, African countries and some international organisations will in 2019 start implementing a three-year project on HIV and AIDS prevention among adolescents and health promotion at community level.
The meeting was part of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held between September 2 and 4.
The First Lady has been championing programmes aimed at reducing cervical cancer, HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe within her broader philanthropic work under the Angel of Hope Foundation.
Speaking at the meeting, Chinese First Lady Peng said FOCAC 2018 had provided new opportunities for deepening China-Africa cooperation on HIV/AIDS control.
