The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa have reached 2,511,368 with a death toll of 59,354, according to the latest data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
The continent continues to see a steady surge in confirmed cases even as countries prepare for the arrival of COVID-19vaccines.
South Africa remains the hardest-hit country by the pandemic in Africa, having reported 930,711 infections and 24,907 fatalities.
The country accounts for 37.06 percent of the continent’s caseload and 41.96 percent of its death toll.
Only four more countries in Africa have registered more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections; Morocco (418,002), Egypt (126,273), Tunisia (121,718) and Ethiopia (120,348).
These five most-affected countries account for more than two-thirds (68.37 percent) of the continent’s reported caseload.
A total of ten African countries have recorded more than 1,000 fatalities.
The Africa CDC data also showed that by Tuesday afternoon, Africa had registered 2,111,359 successful recoveries. –SOURCE -africa.cgtn.com/2020/12/22
