THE 2025 edition of the Chibuku Road to Fame national finals is set to be a vibrant celebration of Zimbabwe’s contemporary sound, with Afro-fusion expected to take centre stage as the country’s top emerging bands compete for glory this Saturday.

Of the 10 provincial finalists, eight groups represent the Afro-fusion genre, highlighting its rising popularity and creative influence within the local music landscape. The finalists include Chimhanda Band (Harare), DNA Band (Mashonaland Central), Mnenga Band (Manicaland), Afro Pulse (Masvingo), Simuniziva (Matabeleland North), Core Vibes (Midlands), All in One (Mashonaland West) and Dab Band (Bulawayo).

Bringing diversity to the line-up are Bolamba Culture Birds from Matabeleland South, showcasing Traditional Contemporary Music, and Jungle Foxes from Mashonaland East, representing Sungura.

The national finals will illuminate Gwanzura Stadium in Highfield, Harare, where the 10 finalists will perform before a nationwide audience.

This year’s competition carries added significance as it commemorates 25 years of discovering and nurturing musical talent across Zimbabwe, under the anniversary theme: “25 Years of Discovering Talent.”

Jointly organised by Delta Beverages and the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ), the Chibuku Road to Fame platform has evolved beyond a music contest into a cultural incubator that empowers emerging artists, fosters careers and preserves Zimbabwe’s rich musical heritage.

In a strategic move, organisers have reduced the traditional 10 provincial finals to six joint provincial competitions, aimed at broadening participation and intensifying the level of competition.

Winners will receive substantial prizes — first place will be awarded US$15 000 and a recording contract, second place US$10 000 and third place US$7 500.

Last year’s grand finale, held at Glamis Arena in Harare, saw Kweseka Band from Matabeleland North crowned champions, earning US$15 000 and a recording deal. Boom Jazz from Chinhoyi secured second place with

US$7 000, while Bulawayo’s Music To Music finished third, taking home US$5 000.

Adding to the day’s excitement is a stellar entertainment line-up featuring Zimdancehall icons Winky D and Killer T, songstress Feli Nandi, hip-hop star Saintfloew, DJ Nash, the Travellers Band and last year’s champions, Kweseka Band. — @mthabisi_mthire
