ALL is set for the second edition of the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) Commander’s Charity Half-marathon and Fun Day, with an improved field expected at Falcon Golf Club in Hatfield on August 4.
The 21k race was first held last year and attracted more than 1 000 elite and non-elite athletes.
This year, a bigger and better race is on the cards.
AFZ Wing Commander Donovan Muroyiwa, who is also the event’s spokesperson, said the marathon will be open to professional and non-professional runners.
Muroyiwa said the athletes would compete for honours in several categories ranging from 2km, 5km, 10km, and up to the main one — the 21km event.
“The half-marathon is expected to add gloss to an exciting two months of high-profile marathon races, which include the Tanganda half-marathon held in Mutare a fortnight ago and the Victoria Falls one which was held last week.
“This is our second marathon as the Air Force of Zimbabwe, and we believe we will improve after learning from our inaugural edition last year.
“We look forward to bringing in some top athletes and adding some excitement to make the event a success. This year we have incorporated helicopter rides and parachutes so that we make it a family fun day.
“There will also be performances by Killer T and Feli Nandi after the races,” said Muroyiwa.
The charity programme, is aimed at raising funds to assist the underprivileged in society.
“We have several charity initiatives like the golf day, dinner, and horse racing as a way of funding our projects like building of clinics such as Denzva in Rusape, Noromwe, and Negove.
“There will be prize monies for the winners in the 10km and 21km for both men and women categories.
“We have already decided on the race track for the 21km which will finish at Falcon Golf Club with athletes passing through Kumaruwa, Delport, Joshua Nkomo and Harare Drive.
“It is also an opportunity to fight non-communicable diseases, as they can be delayed if one exercise regularly,” Muroyiwa said.
