The Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) has handed over two classroom blocks at Murongwe Secondary School in Mukumbura to the Dande community as it continues to assist marginalised communities in Zimbabwe.
It is the first secondary school in the area. Secondary school learners were temporarily being accommodated at Murongwe Primary School due to inadequate infrastructure.
AFZ Commander Air Marshal Elson Moyo said they will reach out to other areas that are in need of similar assistance as they seek to transform the lives of many people and communities.
“The construction of Murongwe Secondary School was an intervention on the vision of the community that was set into motion by former commander AFZ who is now the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement Air Chief Marshal (Retired) Perrence Shiri,” said Air Mashal Moyo.
“The first project was the construction of Murongwe Primary School in 2011, a response to the dire situation faced by the community in accessing basic education. The school didn’t have classrooms and learners were accommodated in makeshift grass thatched structures.
“Resources were mobilised and a modern primary school with six classroom blocks, computer laboratory, administration block, teachers’ houses and ablution blocks was constructed. The school has piped water and electricity.
“The community expressed the need for a clinic which the AFZ constructed and handed over in 2016. The AFZ noticed that providing a primary school without facilities of a secondary school would fail to achieve empowerment of the community.
“Construction of Murongwe Secondary School started in 2017. Two classroom blocks were handed over in March 2019 to provide a conducive learning environment for students who were temporality accommodated at the primary school.”
Air Mashal Moyo said completion of the secondary school will allow it to be registered as an examination centre and the AFZ will continue to develop the school.
Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Senator Monica Mavhunga who was represented by the provincial development coordinator Mr Cosmas Chiringa said the province is indebted to the AFZ.
“The AFZ has shown great commitment in fulfilling their pledge to this community marginalised for three decades after independence. You first gave us Murongwe Primary School, Murongwe clinic and today Murongwe Secondary School,” said Mr Chiringa.
Air Chief Mashal (Retired) Shiri donated 20 computers to the school.
