The Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) yesterday held the Commander AFZ shooting competitions aimed at training officers and members on skills in arms preparation for future tasks, where such skills are required to defend the nation’s interests.
Among the competitors were the AFZ, Zimbabwe National Army, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, President’s Department and some civilians.
The shooting competition is an annual event on the National Rifles of Zimbabwe Shooting Calendar, with the objective of creating a platform to compete and allow individuals within the security services to reach their full potential.
It ran under the theme, “Enhancing skills at arms for the defence of our national sovereignty, in pursuit of Vision 2030.”
Speaking after the competitions, Commander AFZ Air Marshal John Jacob Nzvede said the shooting competitions come in as one of the efforts to enhance skills at arms for officers and members.
“In view of the importance of the rifle as the frontline weapon of choice for security services, it becomes imperative that officers and members are trained to the highest level to effectively use the weapon,” he said.
“The AFZ and other security services can only measure up to this onerous duty when our officers and members have the highest levels of training in skills at arms and discipline in the use of weapons.”
Air Marshal Nzvede also commended the peace prevailing in the country, adding that security services will not tolerate malcontents, within and outside the country’s borders, especially as the country prepares to host the SADC Summit next month.
Leading Aircraftman (LAC) Tawanda Mudzindiko, who was the grand aggregate overall winner, said: “I would like to thank God for this achievement, this is my first victory and I am very happy.
“Such activities help us a lot; we get to mingle with other officers and with civilians of course, but most importantly, it sharpens our shooting skills.”
