A Kadoma couple was recently rescued by the Air Force of Zimbabwe after being marooned on Munyati River in the district. Naison Magwinya (40) and his wife Zondiwe Muzira (37) of Farm 7, Battlefields in Kadoma were stranded as they tried to make their way to Malsonia Village 6 in Kwekwe last week.
As they attempted to cross Munyati River at around 7am, it suddenly began to swell and they were trapped on a small island.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara said the couple used a cellphone to contact Kwekwe Rural police station and officers there got in touch with Thornhill Air Base in Gweru.
A helicopter was dispatched and the couple was rescued at around 4:30pm after almost nine hours on the island. “We commend the couple for keeping the numbers of their nearest police station because it came in handy when they needed it.
“It is important for people to keep emergency numbers in the event that something happens and they need assistance,” said Insp Mabgweazara.
Meanwhile, a Hurungwe woman is missing and is feared to have drowned.
Jane Shikisha (64) of Goteka Village under Chief Dendera in Hurungwe, left her four-year-old grandson playing at her homestead as she went to fetch firewood but never returned.
He skirt was found on a rock in the nearby Chinendiro River during searches by villagers.
