THERE will be Premiership football in Mt Darwin for the first time in the league’s history – that is if Agama can refurbish Pfura Stadium to a level where it can host top-flight matches.
Agama, who went into the final round of the Northern Region Division One championship race trailing leaders N’ombeyaora, thrashed FC Oden 4-0 in their last game yesterday.
That result, coupled with N’ombeyaora’s 0-1 defeat at the hands of MWOS Under-19 at Ngoni, meant Agama won the league championship with a two-point cushion.
The Mashonaland Central side finished on 88 points while N’ombeyaora ended their campaign on 86 points.
Nesbert “Yabo” Saruchera, the N’ombeyaora coach, had been eyeing a piece of history by taking another club into the domestic Premiership.
However, his dreams were shattered after a defeat on the final day of the campaign.
It also means that N’ombeyaora are the first club from the Scottland family franchise who have failed to win the league championship.
The club’s Division Two side, Scottland Academy, are in pole position to win the championship in their league.
It was a heart-breaking end to the campaign for Saruchera and his men who controlled the championship race for the better part of the season.
However, they will look back to their failure to beat Agama this season after losing their two matches to their main rivals.
Agama coach Paul “Popopo” Chimalizeni is a happy man after guiding his team to the Promised Land.
He was hired to replace Arthur “Tuts” Tutani when Agama were struggling and turned their fortunes around in spectacular fashion.
He will point to their 1-0 win over N’ombeyaora in Harare as the result which changed the championship race and gave them hope that they could win the title.
Yesterday, his men destroyed FC Oden and took the honours.
