Agony of a rural film producer

SHAMVA-BASED film producer, Timothy Mwawunidza, has called upon arts promoters to support untapped talent in the marginalised areas.

The producer, who has just finished working on a movie titled ‘The Bodyguard,’ says it contains a wide cast of talented actors and actresses who need exposure.

“We have just finished  the movie called The Bodyguard and the challenge is that we are in a rural setting, which is marginalised and it will take ages for us to be known.

“Even if we release this movie, it will take a long time before it reaches our potential audience.

“We do a lot of activities as the young people in this area and we are seeking support to expose our talent.”

He added:

“We are doing the Shamva-Bindura Music Awards, which we started in 2021, and it’s now an annual programme.

“Our main objective is to support local artists and the effort they are putting in this industry.

“We started this initiative after we realised that we have untapped talent here but there is no one noticing us.

“The idea was also to stop the young ones from doing drugs and it has worked since most of the time we will be busy.”

He said they mobilised resources on their own to finalise the project.

“In that project, we mobilised resources from well-wishers and we are now in our second year and we are expecting to host Shamva Bindura Music Awards 2023 (SHABIMA).

“We also do different films to accommodate young people to reduce risky behaviour, early marriages and drug abuse.”

Timothy and his group, Talent Hunters, believe the youth, in the marginalised areas, have potential if they get the right support

“We also have a recording studio called Shamva Village Studio and this is a platform where young artists from the rural area come and develop music with messages as well as accessing services like Sexual Reproductive Health Information.

“We got this studio from SIYA Trust.”
