The games, which were played at United College of Education (UCE), Gifford High School and Northlea High in Bulawayo, started on Monday with a total of 26 ministries and five parastatals taking part.

On their way to glory, the Agriculture ministry scooped seven gold medals and three silver medals to take their total to 10.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage came third. They won two gold medals, one silver and one bronze in a contest that saw athletes competing in athletics, football, netball, tug-of-war before a cultural modelling event that was held on Wednesday.

In his closing remarks, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Nicholas Moyo said the games were meant to foster friendship and promote a culture of fitness among Government departments.

“The importance of fitness in the workplace cannot be overstated. Regular physical activity has been shown to improve productivity, reduce stress and boost morale. By prioritising employee wellness, we are investing in the health and well-being of our staff and ultimately the success of our organisations,” said Moyo.

“Throughout the festival, we witnessed a range of exciting events and activities showcasing the diversity of sports and recreational pursuits.”

Moyo also underscored that the results of the festival were not just about winning or losing but about the bonds that were formed, the friendships that were forged and the memories that were created.

“More importantly we have seen colleagues from different ministries come together, support each other and have fun. I would like to acknowledge importance of fitness in the workplace. We have taken a significant step in promoting a culture of wellness and self-care among Government employees.”
