A MAN, who has just completed serving his two-year jail term, has been given an agricultural starter pack to have a starting point in his rehabilitation back into society.
Bernard Bennet was released on Saturday.
He started serving his jail term at Chinhoyi Remand Prison on June 14, 2023, before he was transferred to the Chinhoyi Prison Farm.
“Go and start a new life and forget about crime,” said Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Officer Commanding Mashonaland West, Commissioner Luke Zondai Makuvire.
“The introduction of a starter pack will give an inmate the opportunity to start again and it is hoped this will contribute immensely in curbing recidivism.
“I urge you from now onwards to work harder, look into the future and forget crime.
“The missing link has been the reintegration aspect and I am happy today and I am proud but remain humble that this aspect is finally being realised.”
He said reintegration of former inmates back into society has been a major challenge in this country.
Bennet was overwhelmed by emotions.
“I never thought I’d have a second chance like this. I’m deeply thankful to the ZPCS and Commissioner Makuvire for not only rehabilitating me but also giving me the tools to rebuild my life,” he said.
