Aim higher, Byo team for Nash finals challenged

BULAWAYO Provincial Education Director, Dan Moyo, on Monday challenged athletes from the city to aim higher when they participate in the National Association of Secondary School Heads inter-provincial athletics competition in Marondera tomorrow.Moyo was speaking during the send off ceremony held at Northlea High School on Monday evening. The team left yesterday morning.
He said the team should embrace the National Youth Games spirit which saw them winning the Games last year.

“It was good what Bulawayo did in the Youth Games, go with that spirit and harvest as many medals as you can. What’s crucial is that you have to take this opportunity to aim higher. You will get a chance to go to Cossasa Games or even to get selected for the Region five Youth Games which will be here and also to be spotted by international scouts.

“We have the likes of Kirsty Coventry, Ngonidzashe Makusha and Gabriel Mvumvure who are raising the country’s flag high because they all got scholarships, this is it for some of you, market yourself and make wonders,” said Moyo.

Bulawayo possesses strong talent such as Yvonne Vanhuvaone, Linet Furera, Andile Khumalo and Patience Gurere who are expected to bring medals home. Gurure is a middle distance runner who came first in the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe Cross Country Championships held in Kadoma last month. Bulawayo Province head-in-charge of athletics Peter Gambiza promised that they would raise the bar high this year. He said they would avoid last year’s disappointing performance.

“I promise this time we are going with a good team, we are setting the standard high this time around. We won’t repeat what happened last year, I promise, we want to win and produce a number of athletes for the national team,” said Gambiza.

Peterhouse in Marondera will be a hive of activity tomorrow as athletes will be competing in the cross-country events, heats and field events while the track finals will be on Friday.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Primary School Heads, Matabeleland South Province will be holding their inter-district competitions at Phelandaba Stadium today.

Matabeleland South will be selecting the team to represent the province at the nationals set for Hwange next week.
