Air Zimbabwe last Friday re-launched the Victoria Falls-Johannesburg route in a development expected to see an upsurge in arrivals in the resort town. The re-launch was done at the Victoria Falls International airport and follows the resumption of Victoria Falls/Harare and Harare/Johannesburg flights which have been operating successfully for several months.
Air Zimbabwe last flew the Johannesburg-Victoria Falls route more than three years ago after it was dogged by financial problems.
From the launch date till 30 September, travellers will enjoy a special introductory price of $275 return and $150 one way.
Air Zimbabwe was recently re-admitted as a member of International Air Transport Association (IATA) and also recently acquired a 150 seater Airbus and a 50 seater Embraer.
Air Zimbabwe public relations manager Ms Shingai Taruvinga said direct flights between Victoria Falls and Johannesburg were commencing as part of efforts by the airline to take advantage of increased inbound and outbound traffic.
“We have re-launched the Victoria Falls-Joburg route as we respond to an increase in traffic between the two places,” she said.
Players in the tourism industry congratulated Air Zimbabwe on the achievement, saying they would give the airline full support.
In an interview, Ilala Lodge tourism manager Mr Martin Vaughan said there was a need for players in the industry to support Air Zimbabwe for the betterment of the industry.
“I am actually happy to see that our national carrier is back in the skies. This will work wonders for the tourism industry,” he said.
Shearwater Adventures public relations manager Mr Clement Mukwasi said the forthcoming United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly would provide the airline and the country at large with a good launching pad.
“The airline is back at the right time. And the fact that we have low cost seats per week into Victoria Falls, the development will enable visitors to take advantage of the specials and visit in large numbers,” he said.
