adminAirzim last year struggled to operate effectively due to accumulating debts, causing it to suspend flights after some creditors threatened to impound its aircraft. Chief executive officer Mr Innocent Mavhunga confirmed domestic flights had resumed last Friday while the Johannesburg flight would resume tomorrow.
“The daily flights will continue, even after the ZITF, in an effort to stimulate activity on the routes, which is commensurate with our plans to revive the airline,” he said.
“We will use a combination of the Boeing 737 and other smaller aircraft for the domestic flights, depending on the load. The Bulawayo plane would facilitate the smooth movement of people to and from the trade fair.”
Mr Mavhunga said the move would impact positively impact on Air Zimbabwe which has been struggling to maintain viability, pay its workers as well as being competitive with players such as South African Airways.
Since resuming flights in April last year, the airline has been flying domestic routes three times a week, which was criticised by the business community and players in the tourism sector.
The Government is seeking investors to recapitalise the parastatal so it can reclaim the market share that it had in the late 1980s through to the late 1990s. — New Ziana.
