Chitiyo had a trial stint at Ajax two weeks ago after having first tried his luck at reigning Absa Premiership champions Orlando Pirates.
Although he did not make it at Soweto giants Pirates, Chitiyo caught the eyes of the management and technical staff at Ajax Cape Town on his next stop in the Mother City.
Now the Urban Warriors are looking to making him the third Zimbabwean player on their books as they already have Warriors hotshot Khama Billiat and winger Tafadzwa Rusike.
The Urban Warriors are also home to former Black Rhinos and Dynamos striker Ian “Dibango’’ Gorowa who has been recalled for a second spell as assistant coach at the club.
Ajax Cape Town chief executive George Comitis told The Herald that Chitiyo had acquainted himself well during his trials at the Urban Warriors and the youthful side are now keeping their man close on their radar until the next transfer window opens in June.
Comitis was also hopeful that his club would have created an opening on their foreign quota by the time the next transfer window opens in June.
“He (Chitiyo) has gone back to Zimbabwe but his trials went on very well. We will consider him for next season and we hope to have a slot for a foreigner too by then but we are happy with him,’’ Comitis said.
The Ajax chief executive also revealed his club’s romance with Zimbabweans and said all the locals who had a stint with the Urban Warriors had done well.
Just like giants Kaizer Chiefs who, at one stage, had five Zimbabweans in their line-up, Ajax Cape Town have been acquiring local players on a regular basis.
“We have always done well with Zimbabweans, we have had Wilfred Mugeyi, Edzai Kasinauyo, Ian Gorowa and Edelbert Dinha doing well for us. Now we have Khama and Rusike and they are also doing well, we are very happy with them,’’ Comits said.
Former Ajax and Warriors midfielder Kasinauyo is now Chitiyo’s manager and also has Billiat and Rusike under his portfolio.
Kasinauyo was also happy to watch Chitiyo impress at Ajax which had always been the diminutive forward’s main target after starring in a 2012 season in which he led Monoz to a runners-up slot to Dynamos in the Mbada Diamonds Cup final.
Chitiyo could have actually undergone his trial stint at Ajax in December but an ankle injury he picked in the November 24 Mbada Diamonds Cup final clash with Dynamos, which Monoz lost 2-0 via a Roderick Mutuma brace, derailed his move.
But by the time he set off for South Africa, Pirates, who had also been keeping track of him, had sent in their invitation for trials.
Kasinauyo is, however, happy that Chitiyo is headed for the Urban Warriors which he reckoned were a less pressure club.
