AKA’s last interview

SINCE South African rapper AKA died, people have been concerned and worried about how his fiancé Nadia Nakai is feeling.

AKA was gunned down in a suspected organised hit by two unknown assailants in front of a popular restaurant in Durban.

AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, was in the city to perform at his birthday celebration, and he was killed after a meal with friends.

He was in a public and adorable relationship with fellow rapper Nadia Nakai, and their union was one of the most talked about in the music industry.

When news of the musician’s death broke out, fans and the public streamed to Nadia’s Instagram to check for clues or her reaction to the brutal murder of her boyfriend.

She has not yet said anything on her social media since the tragic night.

Nadia made her first public appearance since the incident on February 14 at a Forbes family press brief, where AKA’s father expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love from the public.

Days before the rapper’s callous murder, Insider SA visited the couple’s home for an interview, which fatefully turned out to be AKA’s last.

Here are some intimate details AKA and Nadia Nakai revealed about their love story.

Insider SA initially scheduled the episode for February 13, and then AKA was shot dead three days prior.

They had to postpone the release to February 14 on YouTube.

AKA and Nadia first met in 2013

The two lovebirds first met in 2013, just after Nadia had finished varsity. The “Naaa Meaan” hitmaker was working for Icon, and she interviewed AKA, who was already famous by then. Little did they imagine that they would be hotly in love almost 10 years later.

The couple also revealed that on their first date, AKA invited Nadia to his home, and he prepared a meal for her. Being such a romantic, the “Composure” rapper lit up candles and dimmed the lights as they savoured bok choy and Indonesian sauce.

AKA revealed that his love for cooking comes from his Cape Town background, where his family was exposed to seafood and would occasionally braai.

They enjoyed being home together

When AKA was still alive, he loved being home with Nadia to spend quality time together. In some instances, they would go out and discover new restaurants. The couple explained: “We love being at home. We are both such home buddies. We love being at home, and if it were up to us, we would never leave home.”

Nadia loved AKA because he was a natural leader

Bragga gushed: “I think the favourite thing I love about you is how much of a leader you are. You lead me in a lot of things; you teach me a lot of things. I also like the fact that you are so strong in your beliefs and the way that you think is the right way to do things, and I had to learn a lot of that from you.”

Nadia wanted to have AKA’s baby

Nadia revealed that she wanted to have a baby with her boyfriend. Their little chat was endearing to watch:

Her: I wanna have a baby.

Him: I am sure you do. Oooh, it is getting hot in here (as he fans himself and Nadia bursts out laughing).

Her: I am getting children.

AKA then died on February 10, and it is yet to be seen if her wish was granted or if it tragically slipped away from her grasp.

Investigations

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police were investigating two counts of murder.

“We don’t want to speculate on the reason for the shooting. Our investigations will hopefully reveal the cause of the shooting,” Netshiunda said.

At the weekend, police revealed that the case had been taken over by experienced teams of investigators from the KZN Organised Crime Unit.

Meanwhile, in a case of Whodunnit, social media super sleuths have shared various (conspiracy) theories on who they believe could have had motive.

One of AKA’s friends, Don Design, has been fingered by social media “detectives” as a suspect.

They claim that his behaviour, as seen on the CCTV footage, including his hand gestures, were out of place.

However, AKA’s father Tony Forbes, who spoke at a short media briefing on Tuesday, has asked people to refrain from making such allegations.

“We do not condone what is being said about his friends and those making dangerous statements. We appeal to them to cease doing so,” Forbes said. — Wires
