RENOWNED dub-poet, Albert Nyathi, says a collective effort is needed to fight drug and substance abuse in showbiz.
The 60-year-old said the problem has been prevalent for ages.
In an interview with H-Metro, Nyathi urged artists to shun drug and alcohol abuse, saying it can affect their careers.
“The practice (drug and alcohol abuse) is as old as prostitution.
“However, not everyone in the entertainment industry does drugs.
“Drugs are not good because people get addicted to them and end up being incapable of functioning without them,” Nyathi said.
He said drug and alcohol abuse have ended many careers.
“Drug and alcohol abuse have over the years proved costly and some promising artists suffered stunted growth.
“On that note, I urge young artists to desist from drug and alcohol abuse.
“I don’t take drugs and this has helped me live longer and go places.”
Many local artists take drugs and some have landed in rehabilitation to fight the demons.
A number of campaigns have been held to fight drug abuse, but it appears the fight is being lost.
