THE Albino Association of Zimbabwe has donated 800 pairs of spectacles to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) for inmates and prison officers.
This initiative aligns with the upcoming World Sight Day on October 10, which highlights the importance of eye care globally.
In an interview with H-Metro, the executive director of the Albino Association, Bruce Nyoni, emphasised the significance of the contribution.
“We recognise the essential role that the ZPCS plays in fostering a more inclusive environment.
“By providing these glasses, we are ensuring that our brothers and sisters have access to comprehensive eye health care.
“The prices of spectacles in this country are beyond the reach of many, it is crucial that we provide these essential tools for communication and reading, particularly for those preparing to reintegrate into society.”
The donation included 400 pairs of spectacles for Harare Central Prison and 400 for Chikurubi Maximum Prison.
“We have set these aside specifically for inmates, ensuring that we leave no one behind and maintain gender balance.
“We plan to complete the donations this October, coinciding with World Sight Day, ensuring that more individuals receive the eye care they desperately need,” he said.
ZPCS Assistant Commissioner, Dr Memory Makuchete, expressed gratitude for the Albino Association’s generosity.
“This donation is a welcome addition to our health directorate.
“Previously, we had to refer inmates with eyesight problems to external specialists, which posed logistical challenges and this partnership fills that gap, allowing us to better support both our officers and inmates.”
