ALEXANDER Park Primary were crowned the BancABC Challenge Cup champions when they beat Lusithania 2-1 in the final at their backyard over the weekend. Six teams took part in the tournament. Alex Park were in pool A which had Gateway and Twin Rivers and they had to negotiate their way through penalty shoot-out against Gateway which they won 4-3.
Lusithania were in pool B which had Borrowdale and Maranatha Primary schools.
The banking institution also took time to donate some soccer kits to three of the schools as a way of giving back to the community.
After supporting girls schools by offering a coaching clinic to Regina Mundi in Gweru a fortnight ago, the BancABC team will proceed to Mutendi High School in Masvingo for the same programme.
Meanwhile, a Mufaro Chareka inspired St John’s College were recently crowned the Conference for Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe Under-16 soccer tournament champions following a 3-1 win over rivals Peterhouse in the final.
Chareka was top goal-scorer at the tournament with four goals after an impressive display during the two-day tournament.
St Johns’ coach, Joe Davies, said they have good players who can go a long way if they continue to take soccer seriously.
“The event went on well and we managed to win and we are happy for that and we hope that nine of our players who were short-listed to be part of the team that will tour Germany will make it.
“We now look forward to the trials,” said Davies.
St John’s first team was last year under the guidance of FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza.
