Alexio recounts accident horror

At about 1am on Saturday morning, Alexio Kawara was gladly looking forward to a video shoot of his new single “Zva Zvinhu” and a show at Book Café where he was billed to share the stage with Gary Tight later that day. After dropping a friend in Avondale, Kawara steered his Toyota Mark II along Sam Nujoma Street towards home in Glen Norah.

As he was about to cross Natal Road, misfortune stuck and the what happened spelt doom.

The next thing, Kawara saw himself on a hospital bed at Parirenyatwa and was told he had been hit by a car. He realised he had broken his right leg.

Yesterday the musician recounted events of the horrific night.

“It was an ordinary day as we were preparing for a video shoot and a show at the Book Café on Saturday,” Kawara narrated.

“I was on my way home from Avondale. A vehicle in the outer lane drove into the inner lane while indicating right and we had a minor accident.”

Kawara said he decided to check on the other driver.

“I was still in a state of shock and I rushed to the other car and the driver indicated that he was okay but had some chest pains.

“I ran back to my car to get my phone so I could call for assistance. I was not sure if the other driver was really fine and I wanted someone to attend to him since he had talked about chest pains.

“I was shocked and I was alone so I needed assistance. The accident was minor but I know it is dangerous to underestimate an accident.

“As I rushed to my car, I saw flashing lights and realised another driver was trying to avoid my parked car. I do not think he saw me because it seems he had not realised that there was an accident. I saw the car coming. I saw it was speeding straight at me. I knew I had to do something to avoid it, to run or to jump but it was too late.”

The “Shaina” hitmaker does not remember what happened thereafter but became conscious hours later at Parirenyatwa Hospital.

“The moment I was hit I became unconscious. The only thing I remember was giving someone my wife’s number. I woke up hours later to find myself lying on a bed.

“I am told the man hit me and drove off to Avondale Police Station for safety’s sake when some people chased him after the accident.”
Kawara is not sure when he will fully recover to resume shows.
