THERE’S a fire behind Aliyah “Lanso” Phiri’s comeback that’s impossible to miss. The 25-year-old former Africa Boxing Union Lightweight champion is gearing up for his next bout, an eight-round non-title fight against Jonathan Lotango of DR Congo, set for August 30 at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale.
It’s only his second fight since returning from a doping ban.
Phiri was stripped of his ABU title last November after testing positive for Frosinone, a banned substance. The violation stemmed from a test taken in March last year, shortly after his successful title defence against Tanzania’s Saidi Mkola in Harare.
His suspension ended in March. A few weeks later, Phiri stepped back into the ring and beat Mbaraka Mtangembuda, also at the 7 Arts Theatre. Now he’s eyeing a bigger stage, and a shot at redemption, starting with Lotango.
“I am still around and I am still on top of my game,” Phiri told Zimpapers Sports Hub yesterday.
He’s well aware that the failed test dented his reputation and disappointed fans.
“That ban was a learning process. What I promise is I won’t disappoint my fans again,” said Phiri. His team maintains the banned substance was taken unknowingly.
Before the suspension, Phiri was among the most exciting names in local boxing. He was even being considered for a World Boxing Council bout.
“I never stopped training, so I am in great shape. The rust is off now and I am ready to shine again. I want to be an example of resilience and perseverance,” he said.
The August 30 tournament, Rise of Champions Six, is being staged by Otto Boxing Stable. It will also feature World Boxing Federation champions Tinashe “Jones” Majoni and Hassan Milanzi, but much of the buzz is around Phiri’s return.
“The boy looks good, he is ready for Lotango. After this fight he will certainly go for an international title bout in December,” said his trainer and manager, Ali “Otto” Phiri.
“We are treating Lotango with respect because he is a good boxer. Fans should expect fireworks in this bout,” added Otto, who is also Aliyah’s older brother.
Lotango, 26, enters the ring with a 4-1-0 record.
