Although Valentine’s Day just comes once a year, it brings fascinating experiences for some love-birds.
Today lovers are likely to take advantage of the weekend shows to spoil their each other when they go out, exchanging gifts and finding ways of spending their time in a romantic way.
Most gift shops in town started selling Valentine gifts many days ago because they know that lovers still want to grab something for their partners.
It can be a teddy bear, coffee mugs, chocolates, rings, necklaces or anything, but the theme is still the same – love.
As if taking a cue from the shops, hotels also have fabulous offers for lovers by slashing down their prices for two.
In the capital, there is one shop that sells electrical gadgets which is running a promotion whereby couples can be photographed for free.
For Solomon Maredza of Harare, it is business as usual in office but a lot of love gestures will flow to his partner.
“I am going to buy her flowers and take her out and probably spring a surprise for her. I am going to spend the whole day speaking the language of love, despite loving her everyday. We are also going to play a lot of romantic music,” said the self-confessed romantic, who is also a singer.
At Holly’s Hotel there is a Valentine’s special show, themed bum shorts party where couples will get free Viceroy tots. Valentine is about expressing love to all the people around you.
“ I believe it is about giving, through exchanging gifts and donating to the poor. People should do like what St Valentines did, he gave a letter to someone expressing his love to that person. We should take a cue from him,” one Precious Moyo said.
However, some people suggest that Valentine’s Day helps in mending relationships that were on the brink of collapse as couples can patch up and re-unite.
“My relationship was teetering as we were always quarrelling but when I bought her flowers, a bottle of perfume and a blouse on Valentine’s Day, she smiled and we made up,” said Thomas Muzuva of Queensdale.
Valentine’s Day is also a way of getting to know new places.
Places like Victoria Falls, Kariba, Great Zimbabwe and Lake Chivero where activities like bungee-diving, boat-riding, game and sight-seeing as well as swimming take place, are often the choice of some couples.
Nyama Choma, The Kraal restaurant that was for long time housed in Tynwald has finally found a serene home at the shores of Lake Chivero.
The place opened its doors to the public a month ago, but will officially open the place tomorrow for a belated Valentine’s Day with a special dinner for couples.
Known for as the bastion of traditional dishes cooked on open fire, Nyama Choma has maintained its tradition, while adding a few specials to offer a variety of meals to its growing clientele.
A visit to Nyama Choma, would ensure a fun-filled day that includes a boat ride, braai by the lake, various entertainment activities and an array of flavoured African cuisine.
Otilia Tsungo, supervisor at the joint, said Nyama Choma has prepared a memorable love weekend for couples.
