THE Landa John Trust will tomorrow hold its inaugural fundraising golf tournament at Harry Allen golf club.
The fundraising initiative is part of efforts to harness resources that will be channeled towards the development of the Landa John Nkomo Seconday School, a brain child of the late Vice President and national hero.
The idea, said Jabulani Nkomo, spokesperson of the Landa John Trust, was motivated by the noble idea of developing the region that their father never lived to achieve and were hoping to complete the initiative through the Trust.
“We hope that we will be able to raise a decent amount of money to see the Trust investing in something meaningful for the school. We have tried as much as possible to contact corporate and individuals that we believe can assist in our efforts. We have not exhausted them because our father was a father to many, but we will ensure after the launch we go as wide as possible to get many on board our fundraising initiatives,” said Nkomo.
The golf tournament will be different from other tournaments in that besides the social or corporate golfers, it will feature 16 junior golfers under Junior Golf Zimbabwe. They will compete for their own prizes different from the other golfers. These are young aspiring professional Golfers aged between nine and 16 years.
“We felt that we needed to support the youngsters to achieve their dreams. This was inspired by our late father’s wish for children to be given an opportunity to excel, not only in class, but in sport as well,” said Nkomo, a keen golfer himself.
He said this fundraising event will be an annual event going forward.
The trust hopes to pursue other projects like the John Nkomo Room, where they will keep his pictures, memoirs and other trivia.
Nkomo also said that they hope to engage with and support institutions and bodies that deal with issues to do with peace, tolerance and national healing, which the late VP was known to have fought for.
