ALL is not well for former Sables and Natal Sharks winger Danny Delport who has been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease after having resettled in Perth, Australia.
The disease affects the cells that control voluntary muscle activity including speaking, walking, swallowing, and general movement of the body.
The 62-year old former Sables backliner, who could play at both scrumhalf and wing, played for the Sables between 1976 and 1983.
He played with the greats who included Ian Robertson — who is widely considered as the best rugby talent ever to have emerged from Zimbabwe — Ray Mordt, Iain Buchanan and Frank Inocco.
He started at scrum-half in the Maritzburg Varsity Under-20 B side in 1971 and was then rushed into the first team in 1972 and played on the wing.
Just a season later he made his provincial debut and had three years (1973-75) in the Natal team.
He returned to the family farm in Rhodesia in 1976 and played for the national team until 1983
Delport left Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium and settled in Cape Town where he was involved in accounting, construction and farming.
The family moved to Australia in October 2008 and, until last week, Delport worked as a general labourer in the construction industry and life has not been sweet for him there.
