THE stage is set for the 10km Choppies Fun Run to be held at Nkulumane Complex in Bulawayo tomorrow. Rebranded Choppies, the 10km race was formerly known as the Nkulumane Fun Run.The race will start and end at Nkulumane Complex, with athletes using the same route as the one used in the Old Mutual race a fortnight ago.
In an interview yesterday, the Bulawayo Athletics Board secretary Dailes Bingadadi said they were expecting a host of seasoned athletes to participate in the event.
“The preparations are at an advanced stage, we expect athletes to come in numbers, final registration will be done tomorrow (today) at Nkulumane Complex,” she said.
Registration for senior athletes is $5 while juniors will pay $3. Choppies poured in R100, 000 in this year’s competition. The winners in seniors, both men and women’s categories, will walk away with R5, 000 each while runners-up will pocket R3, 000.
Second runners-up will get R1, 500 while fourth-placed athletes will win R500 each. In the juniors and wheelchair categories, both men and women winners will walk away R1,500 richer while runners-up will grab R1,000.
Second runners-up will get R750 each. Choppies purchasing manager Stanford Mazura yesterday said they were expecting athletes from all corners of the country to register for the last race of the year.
“All athletes should come in numbers and join the race as we are celebrating our 15th anniversary. It’s only the name of the race that has changed nothing else, so we expect a good turnout of athletes and the community as this is the last event in the city,” he said.
Olympian Wirimai Juwawo, who won the Old Mutual 10km race last month, will be hoping to retain the title.
Hwange’s Phathisa Ngwabi, Rutendo Nyahora and Chiedza Chikore are some of the top athletes expected to feature in the race.
