it failed to take off last year because the organisers faced challenges in mobilising the resources.
Harare Athletic Board secretary, Silas Muringani, yesterday said that they were expecting a strong presence of some of the country’s top middle and long-distance athletes at tomorrow’s event.
“The preparations for the competition have been going on well and the people behind this race have done a good job. I am sure we are going to have a positive response from most of the top athletes.
“Some of the athletes who usually compete in South African races are around and could take part,” said Muringani. Muringani expect seasoned athletes such as Point Chaza, Jonathan Chinyoka, Wirimai Juwawo and Kelvin Pangiso to take part in this race. “There are also athletes like Gilbert Mutandiro, who got an invitation to the London Marathon.
“So this race on Sunday could be an opportunity for him to test his speed.
“Even athletes like Thandiwe Nyathi of LM Academy are expected to take part and I am sure Kudakwashe Shoko will also compete,” said Muringani.
The top prize for the Open race is US$600 while the first wheelchair athlete home will earn US$400.
Elford Moyo and Edmund Makutya of Danhiko look set to dominate the senior men’s wheelchair section. Prizes have also been put on the table for the high schools, primary schools and uniformed forces teams.
Freddy Kashiri, who has continued to defy age, is expected to compete in the Grandmasters’ category together with Albert Magee.
“Dzivaresekwa High and Kuwadzana High schools are going to bring a number of runners and we also expect some competitors from the Highfield community to take part in this race,” said Muringani.
Race director, Reuben Bezvo, said the race will start at 8am at President Mugabe’s house in Old Highfield and finish at Machipisa Friendly Supermarket.
