Thousands of people from all walks of life will today throng various venues dotted across the country to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day.
President Mugabe will officiate at the main celebrations slated for the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
Ministers of State in all the provinces will preside over celebrations in their areas where they will read President Mugabe’s speech and inspect the guard of honour.
President Mugabe yesterday paid tribute to the Defence Forces for their sterling work in the last 34 years in his speech to mark Heroes Day at the National Heroes Acre.
“Although Defence Forces Day is only due tomorrow (today), allow me to pay tribute to our defence, police, prisons and security services for their unflinching, relentless and dedicated service in guaranteeing and maintaining peace and stability in our country,” he said.
“Zimbabwe has steadily maintained its role of fulfilling regional peace and sustainable development. We depend on our security and defence forces for the maintenance of our peace and security as a free and sovereign country.
“We dare not drop our guard. We will through various continental and international fora, contribute to the creation and maintenance of a peaceful international environment.”
ZDF said in a statement yesterday that all was set for the big day, with a number of activities lined up in various areas.
In Harare, gates to the National Sports Stadium will open early, with activities starting at around 7am.
There will be live music performances by Jah Prayzah and his 3rd Generation Band and Alick Macheso and Orchestra Mberikwazvo.
President Mugabe will inspect the guard of honour before making his speech, followed by various displays.
A soccer match between the ZDF soccer select and their Namibian counterparts will cap proceedings.
