ENTRIES for this year’s African Union Triathlon challenge set for Troutbeck Inn, Nyanga, this weekend continue to steadily rise with more than 16 athletes registering for the elite division so far.
The prestigious ATU will mark the end of the 2013-2014 season and has attracted contestants from across the continent, according to a statement released by Triathlon Zimbabwe president Rick Fulton.
“Entries in the Men’s elite field have reached 16 athletes, while the women has 12 athletes and this is the best elite field to race ever at Troutbeck and All-African.
“Countries so far represented are Egypt, kenya, Namibia, Mauritius, South Africa and Zimbabwe,” said Fulton.
TZ said South African’s Richard Murray, ranked number four in the world and a 2012 Olympian, is among the top dogs at the event where he faces defending champion Henri Schoeman, also of South Africa.
Schoeman has won the event for the past two editions and is now familiar with the route and the mile swim, which is his strong area.
Fulton said 2012 junior world champion, Wian Sulwald of South Africa, is also in while in the women’s section Kate Roberts (SA) and Gillian Sanders are among the favourites
Zimbabwe will provide the bulk of the athletes with Martin Mbofana hoping to use the event to prepare for the Two Oceans race in South Africa.
