For over three decades, Ngozi Mine — officially Richmond Landfill in Bulawayo — has been more than a dumpsite. For communities in Richmond, Ngozi and Kelvin North, it has been a daily health hazard.
Open burning, toxic smoke, leachate seeping into groundwater, and hundreds of informal waste pickers — including children — working without protective clothing have defined the site.
Now, following Government’s engagement of Geo Pomona Waste Management — the company behind the transformation of the Pomona dumpsite in Harare into a modern waste management park — a new model is coming to Bulawayo.
One that promises sustainable, environmentally friendly waste management and formal, decent jobs for communities that have suffered the most.
