THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) is preparing to play host to the third edition of the Bulawayo Sports Economy Indaba, which is scheduled to take place at the Large City Hall on Wednesday.

Under the theme “Unlocking the Future of the Sports Economy,” this year’s edition aims to bring together policymakers, corporate sponsors, educational institutions and sports professionals to encourage collaboration, resource-sharing and integration.

The Indaba will provide a platform to address key issues within the sports sector, including the need for improved infrastructure, youth development centres, investment opportunities and potential partnerships.
Participants will include athletes, coaches, sports economists and marketing experts, all contributing to a dynamic and enriching dialogue.

The goals of the Sports Economy Indaba are to advance sports development, consolidate resources, identify investment opportunities, build partnerships and establish Bulawayo as a destination for sports tourism. The event is also expected to drive capacity building, inform policy development, promote infrastructure growth and facilitate networking among stakeholders.

“Bulawayo is committed to ensuring that sports not only remain a source of pride for its residents but also become a cornerstone of its economy. To this end, the City has invited key policymakers and regulators to participate as panelists, including representatives from the Ministry of Sports, Arts, Recreation and Culture, the Sports and Recreation Commission of Zimbabwe and various educational institutions,” said Nesisa Mpofu, the council’s corporate communications manager.

In 2023, the City of Bulawayo launched its Sports Economy Initiative, a strategic effort to align traditional sports practices with economic development.

Notable events from the initiative include the Sports Economy Launch and Competitions, organised in partnership with the Squash Rackets Association of Zimbabwe, and Asitshoveni, a cycling celebration that brings together both professional and amateur cyclists. The event highlighted the role of bicycles in promoting eco-friendly and efficient transportation, aligning with Bulawayo’s vision of becoming a smart city that prioritises sports and sustainable living.

On April 19, 2024, the City Hall car park was transformed into a dynamic venue for the Sports Economy Exhibition.

“This collaborative effort brought together representatives from various sports associations and corporate sponsors. The event aimed to register individuals interested in sports, drive innovative value creation, and connect local businesses with sports organisations. By uniting diverse stakeholders, Bulawayo is poised to unlock its full potential in the sports economy, fostering collaboration, innovation, and investment to create a thriving and sustainable future,” said Mpofu.
