The Herald, August 10, 1990
THE Zanu (PF) deputy secretary for publicity and information (Harare Province), Cde Noel Chaya, has urged people to turn out in their thousands for this year’s Heroes’ Day celebrations to be held at the National Heroes Acre tomorrow.
In a statement yesterday, Cde Chaya said transport arrangements had been made and buses would be available at the usual pick-up points from 6.30am.
“As most of you are aware that the National Heroes Acre is in our province it is our duty to come out in full force and pay our respects to our fallen heroes . . .”
Last night, the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Cde Joseph Msika, said buses would also be provided in Bulawayo, Gweru, Masvingo, Mutare and Chinhoyi to ferry people to centres where the provincial governors will officiate.
In rural areas, efforts were being made to provide transport from the villages to the celebration centres.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
- National Heroes Day is a holiday that has been observed since the early 1980s to honour sons and daughters of the soil that died while fighting to liberate the country and are interred in graves within and outside the country.
- The war of liberation lasted more than 15 years and over 10 000 freedom fighters died and over 20 000 civilians were killed during this period.
- Government has done a lot to ensure that its great sons and daughters have a decent burial. Soon after independence, the Government started constructing the National Heroes Acre and also setting up provincial heroes’ acres in the country’s 10 provinces. The Government has also constructed decent structures at places like Nyadzonya and Chimoio where there are mass graves.
