THE Highlanders Athletics Club is gearing up for its biggest race yet, with a 21km half marathon set to headline this year’s edition on Sunday.
In previous years, the event featured 5km run-walks and 10km races. This time, the half marathon takes centre stage, with the Highlanders Clubhouse serving as the start and finish point. Alongside the races, participants can also take part in Zumba and aerobics sessions.
Club chairperson Lawrence Phiri, told the media they are expecting a strong turnout.
“We have retained the Zumba session, which will be an integral part of the run as it offers those who feel running is not for them a chance to be part of this event. Last year, we had close to 150 runners and this year we are looking to double that number, with enquiries and confirmations of attendance coming from as far as Kwekwe,” Phiri said.
He added that this year’s race comes with added incentives.
“While last year it was a simple fun run with no medals and prizes, this year it will be different with medals and running shirts given to all participants. There are prizes for winners, which we are finalising with a sponsor and will announce by end of day tomorrow.”
Phiri outlined the race route, which will use Airport Road.
“The clubhouse is the start and finish point. For the 21km race, runners will make a U-turn at the 10.5km mark and return to the clubhouse. The 10km runners will turn back at the 5km point, while the 5km participants will turn back at the 2.5km mark,” he explained.
Corporate teams have also pledged their support, with CBZ, First Mutual, Zimparks, NSSA and Nyaradzo among the companies sending employees to participate. Other partners include Schweppes, Sila Health, SWIFT, John Landa Nkomo Memorial Trust, Econet, ZimbosAbantu and Itel.
Phiri said the event ties into Highlanders Football Club’s build-up to its 2026 Centenary Celebrations.
Bulawayo Athletics Board chairperson Watson Madanyika also welcomed the marathon.
“As BAB, we are happy about what is coming. We are proud of Highlanders Athletics Club for organising this marathon. It is events such as this that prepare our provincial and national athletes to qualify for regional and international competitions. Isaac Mpofu has also promised to be part of this marathon,” Madanyika said.
He urged the organisers to align with national standards to attract more professionals and called on corporates to support the initiative.
To help runners prepare, Highlanders Athletics Club has been offering free weekly training sessions since August 17, led by technical manager Sidney Zimunya. These remain open to all interested participants.
