Nkayi, Hwange gear up for defining clash

THIS weekend could shape the destiny of the Zifa Southern Region Division One League title.

The three horse race involving leaders Bulawayo Chiefs (61 points), second placed Nkayi United (58), and Hwange (56) hits a decisive stage as Nkayi United face Hwange at Luveve Stadium in a fixture many are already calling the title decider.

With just seven games left, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Bulawayo Chiefs will sit out after Ajax Hotspurs’ expulsion handed them three points and three goals. That development heaps pressure on their closest rivals, who must battle it out for survival in the title chase.

Chiefs will be idle but watching closely from the sidelines.

Football analyst and league follower Dumi Dhlakama, believes this is the weekend the title race could open up completely.

“Both teams know a win is crucial, as Chiefs have already secured three points. This should lead to an open game, as a draw would only benefit Chiefs, a scenario that promises plenty of excitement,” Dhlakama said.

He added that Nkayi will be hunting revenge after losing to Hwange in their last meeting. “Coming off a victory last week, they will be full of confidence. Hwange, meanwhile, have recovered from a slump in form that saw them drop points against Nust and Bulawayo Warriors. With just two points separating the sides, a fierce battle is inevitable.”

Dhlakama also highlighted the midfield as the likely battleground.

“I am particularly looking forward to the clash between Nkayi’s Grant Chigwenhese and Nhlanhla Fumapano, and Hwange’s Mongameli Tshuma and Marcelline Mlilo. While Tshuma and Mlilo are primarily wingers, they frequently tuck inside, which should see them go head-to-head with Nkayi’s duo. That’s where the match could be won or lost.”

Fans will pay a dollar to watch the showdown, which will follow an early kickoff between Bulawayo City and Bosso 90.
