All set for Landa J High School commissioning

President Mugabe will officially commission the school, which Vice-President Landa J Nkomo is    building.

The Principal Director in VP Nkomo’s Office, Mr Benson Martins Dube, said the commissioning of      the school and launch of the E-Learning Centre was a regional event that would be attended by thousands of people from the three provinces of Matabeleland, Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South.

He said 30 buses and several trucks were provided in the three provinces to transport those willing to attend the historic event.

“All the preparations have been finalised and we expect thousands of people from the three provinces to attend. Transport has been arranged and 30 buses and trucks have been dispatched to carry people from different places. This is their day and we urge them to come in their large numbers,” said Mr Dube.

Tsholotsho District Administrator Ms Nosizi Dube said the district was excited to play host to such a big event.

“This is a regional event and we are very excited to host it. We expect plus or minus 15 000 people from the three provinces. The bulk of people will come from Tsholotsho. Each ward has been allocated a truck for transport while schools with buses will transport their pupils,” said Ms Dube.

“We expect about 7 000 pupils from different schools in the region. We received a lot of food donations from companies and local authorities who donated cattle. As we speak, we have more than 12 cattle for the event.

“We also have more than 4 000 litres of opaque beer from Ingwebu Breweries. We are really prepared. EMA will donate trees to the schools for planting. Arrangements have also been made to boost the Internet network during the event. We have also been assured that access to the network will be for free. We have also started pitching tents to accommodate the huge crowd.”

Ms Dube said after the commissioning ceremony, the large gathering would be treated to lots of entertainment programmes from different artistes including Jeys Marabini and Chase Skuza.

On Wednesday, a high powered delegation led by the Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet Dr Ray Ndhlukula, toured the school to assess the final preparations for the commissioning ceremony.

Landa J High School is situated at Manqe Village, about 10km west of Tsholotsho Business Centre.

The name of the school was changed from Manqe Secondary to Landa J High early this year following a request from the Tsholotsho community that wanted to pay tribute to VP Nkomo for his contribution in developing the school.

VP Nkomo is on record insisting that the school would be one of the best in the country in terms of examination passes in Mathematics and science subjects as well as information and communication technology (ICT) training.

He said the school was going to be a model of a modern learning centre that would help curb migration of youths to countries such as South Africa and Botswana.

VP Nkomo said his dream was to see pupils from Tsholotsho attaining good passes in Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations and being able to get places at local universities such as Lupane State University and the National University of Science and Technology (Nust).
