Family, friends and members of the arts community are set to gather on May 2 as the family of the late Desire “Moyoxide” Moyo hosts a memorial service in his honour. The event will be held at his homestead in Ezimbilini Extension Resettlement, Mbembesi, Matabeleland North.

Moyoxide died on October 10, 2025, following a tragic road accident. He died on the spot when the vehicle he was travelling in collided with an elephant near Shangani, along the Bulawayo–Harare Highway, close to his homestead in Ezimbilini. He was buried on October 16, 2025, at Lady Stanley Cemetery.

One of the organisers of the memorial service, a protégée of Moyoxide, Thaluso Da Poet, said preparations for the remembrance event are progressing well, with the programme set to begin at 10 am.

“Moyoxide was a man of honour, and we remember him every day because of the way he served the arts industry and the people he represented. With less than a year since his passing, the family decided to hold a memorial service in his honour, bringing together people he lived with and served.

“The family chose Ezimbilini because it is Moyo’s home, which he loved dearly,” said Thaluso Da Poet.

Thaluso confirmed that, although the memorial is intended to be a small and intimate event, some of these creatives Moyoxide worked with will perform to honour him.

He added that the memorial service is also meant to provide closure for Moyoxide’s family and associates, allowing them to move forward.

Thaluso himself had to delay the release of his much-anticipated album, Thula Sizwe/Umswane Wembababa, which he co-produced with Moyoxide. The album will be officially launched on May 15 at Sabela Studios. The event will also feature performances by Moyoxide’s children, Nomalanga Choice and Methembe Oxide Junior.

Thaluso further revealed that the memorial service will mark the beginning of releasing Moyoxide’s collaborative works with fellow creatives, as well as his own unreleased material.

“Many artistes, including myself, have projects with Moyoxide that are yet to be released. Personally, I had to delay dropping my upcoming album in his honour because we co-produced it.

“Releasing it before fully grieving felt inappropriate to me, so I postponed it until after the memorial service. After this, it will be a green light for us to move forward and release the works we created with Moyo,” said Thaluso.
