for the inaugural Riccoffy Invitational Tournament.
The one-day tournament will be held as part of the Zimbabwe Squash Academy’s second anniversary.
The Zimbabwe Squash Academy was formed in July 2009 as a way of giving the underprivileged children an opportunity to improve their lives through the sport of squash.
Mashumba Mukumba, one of the tournament’s organisers, said yesterday that the event was initially supposed to be held in July but was postponed due to financial constraints and it is now taking place after it has been rescued by Nestlé’s Riccoffy product.
“The tournament will be played this Saturday, starting at 8amand finishing at around 4pm.
“We are inviting all junior squash players from the Mashonaland region and it includes children from the following areas and schools: Arundel, Budiriro, Chisipite, Chitungwiza, Dzivaresekwa, Domboshava, Eaglesvale, Epworth, Gateway, Glen View, Glen Norah, Hellenic, Kuwadzana, Mount Pleasant High, Prince Edward, Peterhouse, St George’s College, St John’s College, Twin Rivers and Watershed,” Mukumba said.
He also said that the tournament will allow all the kids from different background to showcase their talents and walk away with different prizes.
The tournament is being organised by Mukumba with the help of Zimbabwe’s number one squash player Ishmael Mubure and Admire Magwaza.
“Wee are very proud to have a sponsor like Nestle because I now feel squash is a sport which can be compared with other sports in this country. And not only that, we are going to host the All-Africa Squash Championships for juniors in April next year for juniors and then the seniors tournament in July. I am looking forward to see some good squash being displayed during and after the tournament because it provides experience to the kids,” Mukumba said.
He also said this weekend’s event is their first big junior invitational tournament and they are hoping “to host another big one in future, which will attract players from all over the country”.
