The Zimbabwe National Table Soccer Championship known in the townships as slug or foosball held its top 20 tournament in preparation for the upcoming regional tournament.
The team was boosted on Sunday as it clinched a sponsorship deal with Better Brands in Mabvuku.
The current top five include Douglas Matambanashe, Sonny Sivare, Noel Justin, Richard Choto, and Luka Ngwarati who will represent Zimbabwe at regional games.
The regional games are set for March in South Africa, Zambia, and Uganda.
Pedzisayi “Scott” Sakupwanya, who was present during the tournament said he will fund the team on all tournaments.
He offered to buy 50 tables for foosball to help the youths and fight against drug and substance abuse across the country.
“Most youths have nothing to do and are spending most of their time doing drugs, so I appreciate this initiative from the Zimbabwe Table Soccer Association for making this game alive as it will also serve as employment.
“From now onwards the winner will pocket US$2,000.
“I will do anything in my power to keep on supporting this initiative,” he said.
Zimbabwe Table Soccer Association (ZTSA)president Advocate Coxwell Chigwanha, said he is happy with the progress as they have received sponsorship from Better Brands which is founded by Scott.
“This development is mainly thanks to Better Brands who made it possible as the team will be able to travel and represent Zimbabwe in other countries.
“For our regional games we will first travel to South Africa this March and thereafter we will go to Zambia and finally we will end in Uganda.
“We’ll then wind up our regional ends and then in August we’re going to the United States of America and in September we’re going to China.
“This sport has the potential to become the national sport that takes kids and the youths from the streets and other vices like drug abuse and sexual promiscuity,” he said.
Last year’s national championship saw a Mabvuku resident Matambanashe win for the fourth time in a raw since 2020.
