ALL is set for the inaugural Weeks Zambezi soccer festival to be held on Saturday and Sunday at Zambezi River Ground, Hwange District where eight teams are expected to fight for honours.
The tournament is being sponsored by former Hwange goalkeeper and coach Weekly Mwale to the tune of $500 with the late Chief Hwange’s son Joshua Ncube chairing the organising committee.“Everything is in place for the two-day tournament. The objective is to scout for talent in the rural areas and bring them into active football areas like Hwange town where we have vibrant Division One sides and a Premiership team,” said Mwale who is also the technical advisor of the Hwange Ladies soccer team.

The gangly Mwale said those that will make it are likely to be attached to Hwange and ZPC (Hwange) teams which are playing in the Zifa Southern Region Division One league.

He said there will be a football kit for the winners as well as individual prizes for the player of the tournament, best junior player, goalkeeper of the tournament as well as the most lethal boots on show.

“The teams are Msuna, Mwemba, Kasase, Chezva, Makwa Warriors, Mashala, Olive Bick and Chunga FC,” said Mwale.
With football authorities having postponed all league games due to the Warriors Chan second leg qualifier against Mauritius and the harmonised elections held yesterday, top coaches like Hwange’s Nation Dube, ZPC Hwange’s Solomon Kaseke and Makhosi Mpofu of Mpumalanga are expected to attend the tournament.

Mwale is hopeful that a raw talent will be unearthed as he believes talent is abundant in rural Hwange.
