Busters are the defending champions and the other teams that will be competing for the trophy are Old Miltonians, Western Panthers and Bulldogs.
Matabeleland Rugby Football Board (MRFB) vice-chairman Sean Robinson yesterday said all was set for the first tournament of the season.
He said the competition will mark the beginning of many festivals which will be played before the season kicks off.
“Everything is set for the tournament and we are expecting fireworks. As a board, we will be organising some festivals that will help keep our players active before the start of the season. We are going to have teams from Gweru, Zvishavane and maybe Masvingo participating at these festivals.
“The idea of coming up with festivals before the start of the season is to give our clubs and players time to prepare because Bulawayo is behind Harare. When the season starts, our clubs should be in a position to competitively compete against Harare teams and it is our hope that these festivals we are planning will help our league representatives,” said Robinson.
Busters, Old Miltonians and Western Panthers are the Bulawayo clubs that are competing in the National Rugby League.
Players such as Biselele Tshamala, the former Busters and Zimbabwe Under-19 national team player, and Bradley Takawira are some of the players that have in the past featured at the Zimbo Cup.
The duo now turns out for a Durban-based rugby club.
Junior tournaments have been used by national team players such as Gardner Nechironga and Lloyd Machanjaira, among others, as a platform to showcase their talents.
Robinson could not be drawn into commenting on plans to have the Matabeleland Under-21s tour South Africa before the season starts.
Impeccable sources within the MRFB said the Zimbo Under-20 Cup was one of the tournaments that will be used to identify players for the Under-21 team that is expected to play against South Africa’s Sharks Academy.
