THE Ministry of Health and Child Care has reported that almost 2 million people have received the oral cholera vaccine which was launched on January 29.
So far 1 998 452 people have been vaccinated against a target of 2.3 million people in severely affected districts across all provinces.
Zimbabwe has recorded 25 086 suspected cholera cases, with 2 694 confirmed cases and 455 suspected deaths and 71 confirmed deaths. Harare has seen a significant decline in cases since the roll out of the vaccination campaign, from 200 daily cases.
Recovery rates have increased to a total of 24 408.
“Our aim is to attain herd immunity and to reduce the number of cases.
“By the end of March, we expect that the cases may not be a public health issue, especially with the ongoing roll out.
“Regardless of being vaccinated, we urge members of the public to practice hygiene as this vaccine cannot save them from other diarrhoeal related diseases.
“We also urge people to report early any diarrhoeal related deaths to curb the disease before it spreads further,” said the Ministry in a statement.
